Fruit, Fruit, Fruit.....

A little over a week ago, I sent the Princess to the store to stock up on fruit for me, because Aldi had some amazing prices. Considering I had plans over the weekend that had me home for maybe an hour all weekend, PLUS I was going out of town for three days at the beginning of the week, it wasn't my brightest move.

Yesterday, I realized that 90% of that fruit was getting close to being at the ick stage. Not quite there, but close. I REALLY despise throwing food out, so I promised myself that fruit was GOING to get eaten in the next couple of days because I was NOT going to be all furious at myself. So today I came home and cut up some melons, washed some grapes, sliced some apples and pears. Some of it went in the juicer (because the Princess doesn't LIKE fruit to eat) and some of it is ready for me to nosh on tonight and tomorrow.

So, that's my less food waste plan for the weekend. I do need to get to the store, but I think I might wait til Sunday so I can be sure I eat all this stuff before I buy anything else.

  1. I was sad when I had to stop buying fruit in bulk due to space restriction, but more importantly, because it'd go bad so fast! I can deal with veggies going near-bad (just toss them in a hot dish and call it a day), but fruits are a bit more complicated for me. Glad you were able to save them!

    1. Yeah, I got carried away by the great prices.... didn't think about not being here.

  2. I try to wash and cut up all the fruits and veggies that I buy as soon as I get home from the store. And if I can't, I make sure to do it the next day. If I don't, it ends up going bad before I use it. But if I have it ready to go, everyone in my house is more likely to eat it and I'm more likely to throw extra veggies in recipes when I cook. It's taken me a while to get into the habit of doing this. But there's been too many times when I've had to throw out whole pineapples and it makes me so mad at myself for wasting the food and the money.

    1. That's a really good idea! I need to get into that habit. Do you have any that don't particularly work well with method (I mean that get icky reall fast that way)?

  3. Did you think about freezing it? I just threw a bunch of strawberries in the freezer and will use them in smoothies later in place of ice. Also, when bananas get pretty ripe, they freeze, too. Then I just thaw them for baking (banana nut bread! mmmm). Any kind of berries can be frozen, too. But if you freeze them, you can still use them later in a smoothie or some kind of sauce. Just a thought! I hate to waste, too - I've started shopping every few days in an attempt to eliminate so much waste. We are lucky we have a great produce market just a mile or so from us - so I'm there every few days.
